The negative electrode in an electrolytic cell or battery where oxidation occurs and electrons flow out of the device during discharge.
Etymology
Derived from the Greek 'anodos', meaning 'a way up' or 'ascent'. It was coined in the 19th century by William Whewell at the request of Michael Faraday to describe the path by which electricity enters or leaves a medium.
