The ability of a material to function within the human body or in contact with living tissue without causing a harmful immune response, irritation, or rejection.
Etymology
The word is a compound of the Greek 'bios' (life) and the Latin 'compatibilis' (able to coexist or suffer together). It entered scientific usage in the mid-20th century to describe the non-toxic interaction between man-made materials and living organisms.
