An area of a city or town that has fallen into disrepair, decay, or neglect, often characterized by abandoned or substandard buildings.
Etymology
Originating in Middle English as a word for an unknown plant disease, it evolved by the 19th century to metaphorically describe any condition that destroys or withers the growth of a community or urban environment.
