The act of implementing security systems that monitor and control incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predetermined safety rules to prevent unauthorized access.
Etymology
Derived from the physical building term for a fire-resistant wall intended to stop the spread of flames, the word was adopted in the late 1980s to describe software or hardware barriers that stop the spread of malicious data in computer networks.
