Severe mental disorders in which thought and emotions are so impaired that contact is lost with external reality.

Etymology

Derived from the Greek word 'psyche' meaning soul or mind, and '-osis' meaning an abnormal condition or process. It entered English in the 19th century to describe serious medical disturbances of the mind.
