Definition
A theory of evolution proposing that the union or merging of two or more distinct organisms is a primary driver of evolutionary change and complexity.
Etymology
Derived from the Greek words 'symbiosis' (living together) and 'genesis' (origin/creation), this term was coined in the early 20th century to describe the evolutionary process of organisms merging into a single life form.
