Definition

A victory in a sports contest achieved without having to play because the opponent has withdrawn from the match.

Etymology

Originating in the late 19th century, the term originally referred to a horse race where a horse could win simply by walking over the course if no other competitors appeared. It evolved to describe any unopposed victory in competitive sports.
