anosognosia
ˌænəˌsɒɡˈnoʊʒə
Definition
A condition in which a person with a mental illness is unaware or unable to recognize that they have a medical or psychiatric condition.
Etymology
The word is derived from the Greek 'a-' (without), 'nosos' (disease), and 'gnosis' (knowledge). It was coined in 1914 by neurologist Joseph Babinski to describe patients who were unaware of their own physical impairments.
In the news
The article uses the term to explain why individuals with conditions like schizophrenia may refuse treatment, as they lack the insight to realize they are ill.
