A field of biological research that combines proteomics (the study of proteins) and genomics (the study of genes) to understand how genetic variations influence the proteins produced in a cell or organism.
Etymology
The word is a portmanteau of proteomics and genomics. Proteomics stems from the word protein, which comes from the Greek 'proteios' meaning 'primary' or 'first rank', while genomics is derived from genome, a combination of 'gene' and the suffix '-ome'.
